Playa de las Américas is a fine base for a sunshine holiday, but relying on hotel transfers alone means missing Tenerife's most dramatic landscapes. A vehicle from our independent car hire homepage lets you escape the resort crowds and explore the island's microclimates at your own pace.

With a hire car you can ignore rigid coach timetables and head for the volcanic interior early. Reaching the high viewpoints is simple once you plan a scenic driving route to Mount Teide, so you can enjoy the changing terrain without the stress of a fixed tour.

Why Self-Drive Beats Public Transport

  • No hauling beach bags, towels and snorkelling gear onto a crowded bus
  • Freedom to reach remote coastal villages before the tour coaches arrive
  • Easy access to cheaper supermarket prices away from the beachfront strip

Siam Park and Aqualand

Tenerife has two of Europe's most popular water parks, both minutes from Playa de las Américas. Driving yourself is the smartest way to arrive as the gates open and grab the best loungers before the excursion coaches turn up.

Parking and Costs Compared

Siam Park5 min (TF-1 Exit 73)On-site about 7 euros a day; free public car park 500 m away by the Magma centre or Siam MallAdult tickets about 44 euros in 2025, rising to about 48 euros in summer 2026
Aqualand Costa Adeje10 minFree on-site parking, a real saving over Siam ParkHas a dolphinarium and gentler slides for younger children

If you visit Siam Park in the school holidays, aim to arrive before the 10:00 opening to beat the queues. To lock in the best vehicle and price, compare cheap car hire options online before you reach the island.

Whale and Dolphin Watching

The marine strip between Tenerife and La Gomera became Europe's first Whale Heritage Site in 2021. It is home to resident pilot whales and bottlenose dolphins, so sightings are near-guaranteed at any time of year.

Booking a Responsible Boat Trip

  • Choose an operator flying the official Barco Azul (Blue Boat) flag, which follows the legal approach rules
  • Book a morning departure for the calmest seas, especially in spring and autumn
  • Travel between November and April if you hope to catch migratory whale species passing through

Most trips leave from Puerto Colón in Costa Adeje or the nearby Los Cristianos harbour. The main surface car park at Puerto Colón is busy and charges roughly 1.00 to 1.80 euros an hour, and it fills fast — plan to arrive at least 30 minutes before boarding.

Golf by Hire Car

Tenerife South is a magnet for golfers, with several courses a short drive from the resort. A hire car carries your clubs far more comfortably than a taxi and lets you book early or twilight tee times with ease.

Southern Courses Within Easy Reach

  • Golf Las Américas: right inside the resort, a flat and sheltered layout with on-site parking
  • Golf Costa Adeje: about 5 km away via TF-1 Exit 79, a terraced championship course with parking
  • Amarilla Golf: about 11 to 16 km east near the airport, with coastal holes by the sea
  • Golf del Sur: also 11 to 16 km east, 27 holes set among volcanic black-sand bunkers

All four courses have on-site parking, so you can load the clubs and head straight to the clubhouse.

Best Beaches to Reach by Car

The resort beaches of Troya and Las Vistas are walkable but get very crowded. Packing the hire car lets you seek out quieter sands. If you would rather stay close on some days, our guide to parking in Playa de las Américas shows the best spots to leave the car.

Top Beaches With Your Hire Car

Driving to Masca

The mountain hamlet of Masca has a dramatic ridge-top setting. You need no booking or permit simply to drive the narrow, winding TF-436 up to the village, enjoy the cafés and stop at the Mirador de Cherfe. Parking in the village is free but spaces are very limited.

The Regulated Masca Gorge Hike

Hiking down the famous Masca Gorge to the coast is a different matter, with strict rules. Since April 2025 private cars are banned from the trailhead, so every hiker must use the official shuttle to reach the start of the walk.

To hike the gorge you must book a permit in advance at caminobarrancodemasca.com. Leave the hire car at the Santiago del Teide cemetery car park and catch the compulsory TITSA shuttle (route 355) to the trailhead. The walk is descent-only and ends with a boat to Los Gigantes. Non-resident tickets are roughly 28 euros entry plus 10 euros for the shuttle; it runs Friday to Sunday and children under 8 are not allowed.

Towns, Markets and Nightlife

A car lets you reach authentic Canarian food and culture beyond the tourist strips. If you are collecting your vehicle straight from arrivals, our advice on Tenerife South airport transfers makes for a smooth start.

Markets and Traditional Dining

  • Costa Adeje market: on Avenida de Bruselas, open Thursdays and Saturdays 09:00 to 14:00 — bring cash and go before 11:00
  • La Caleta: a fishing village about 10 minutes away, known for its seafront seafood restaurants
  • Adeje town: drive inland for Restaurante Otelo's garlic chicken, beside the Barranco del Infierno hike (advance booking required)

A hire car is ideal for daytime exploring, but leave the keys at the hotel for a night out. The Verónicas and Starco strip is compact and easily walkable, and Spain's drink-drive limits are very low and have been tightened further toward near-zero for 2026 — treat the safe amount as zero and take a taxi.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is parking free at Siam Park?
Parking inside the Siam Park car park costs about 7 euros a day. You can instead use the free public parking 500 to 600 m away by the Magma centre or Siam Mall, or take the free shuttle bus that runs from points around the resort.
Do I need a hire car to go whale watching?
Most trips leave from nearby Puerto Colón, but a hire car makes it far easier to reach the harbour for an early-morning departure, when the seas are calmest.
Can I still drive to Masca village?
Yes. You can still drive the TF-436 up to Masca village to look around, take photos and eat, with no booking needed. The parking ban and shuttle apply only to people hiking the regulated Masca Gorge trail.
Which beach near the resort is easiest for parking?
Playa del Duque in Costa Adeje is a good choice for drivers: there is a free car park behind Caleta Coast plus underground parking at Plaza del Duque, where the first hour is free.
Can I drive back after a night on the Verónicas strip?
No. Spain's drink-drive limits are strict and set near zero for 2026. If you plan to drink, leave the hire car at your accommodation and use the plentiful resort taxis instead.
