Arriving at Tenerife South
Tenerife South Airport (TFS), known locally as Reina Sofía, is the main gateway for UK holidaymakers heading to the island's sunny south coast. Collecting a hire car here gives you the freedom to explore, starting with a straightforward drive down the toll-free TF-1 motorway. For the bigger picture, see our independent car hire homepage.
- Immediate access to the toll-free TF-1 motorway westbound
- No toll roads anywhere in Tenerife to worry about
- Skip the resort transfer coach and its multiple drop-off stops
The Drive from TFS to the Resort
Getting to the resort is simple, but you must watch the slip roads. You head westbound along the TF-1, where the exits arrive in quick succession. Take Exit 73 for Playa de las Américas; Exit 72 leads to Los Cristianos and Exit 74 to Costa Adeje. Overshoot Exit 73 and you carry on to the next Costa Adeje junction to turn around.
The TF-1 is well lit at night, but the resort's one-way grid is the main source of after-dark confusion. Once you arrive, finding a space can be tricky too, so it is worth reading our guide to parking in Playa de las Américas first. From the resort you can plan day trips such as driving to Mount Teide or work through our guide to things to do in Playa de las Américas.

Desk Pickup vs Meet-and-Greet
At Tenerife South you generally choose between two pickup models. Some firms run a physical desk inside the arrivals terminal, while others (such as PlusCar) meet you in the airport car park, which can be quicker.
Where firms use desks, queues can reach about 40 minutes during concurrent-arrival peaks. If you book with Cicar, they run a desk inside the baggage-reclaim hall and a second counter facing the public arrivals hall — checking both often saves you a long wait.
Book Early for the Best Rates
To secure the right vehicle and avoid peak-season disappointment, compare local rates well ahead. You can compare car hire deals online to find the vehicle that suits your trip before you fly.
Before You Drive Off
A few minutes inspecting the car before you leave the airport car park can prevent disputes when you return it. Local Canary firms (Cicar, Cabrera Medina, Autoreisen, PlusCar and Sanasty) typically include zero excess, ask for little or no deposit and accept debit cards.
Budget international brands such as Goldcar or Record go work differently: they block a large credit-card deposit of around 1,000 to 1,400 euros on a small car unless you buy their in-house excess waiver. Make sure your credit card has the headroom if you choose one of these desks.
Your Pre-Drive Checklist
- Photograph every existing scratch, dent and wheel scuff before leaving the car park, and check they are logged on the contract
- Confirm the fuel policy: local firms are usually full-to-full, while some brokers use full-to-empty
- Locate the V-16 emergency beacon in the glovebox (mandatory in Spain since 1 January 2026)
- Have your booking voucher, UK photocard licence (no IDP needed) and payment card ready
Child Seats, Fuel and Extras
Spanish law is strict on child safety. Under Article 117, a child restraint is required for any child up to 135 cm tall, and children under 15 months must travel rear-facing. Pre-book child seats as an extra rather than relying on availability at the desk.
Fuel Up Inland, Not at the Airport
Avoid the pricey pumps on the immediate airport perimeter. Drive about 10 minutes inland to the Las Chafiras stations for much cheaper petrol. Because the Canaries use the local IGIC tax rather than VAT, petrol is well below UK prices wherever you fill up.
